In September 2009, we changed our foreign language learning from French to Spanish.
Previously we had held a Spanish club which had proved very popular.
Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been having weekly lessons with Maria,
our Spanish teacher, with follow up sessions from class staff wherever possible.
From January 2010, she will also be teaching Years 1 and 2,
supported by the class teachers. Foundation Stage children also learn some
basic Spanish with their own staff.
We hope to hold a Spanish festival day in the summer term.
We aim to give our children confiden.ce at speaking a foreign language at the same time as having fun
Our links with Hope University provide us with 2 trainee teachers
per year with Spanish as their main subjectand the opportunity to hosta student from Spain each year.
We encourage an understanding of the Spanish culture and life, and we help to prepare them
for a more formal course of study at secondary school.
Most learning is based on listening and speaking, individually, in groups or pairs,
with songs, games and a range of activities.
Older children will shortly be moving towards reading and simple writing, according
to the National Strategy for Languages
